There is an ancient myth of the Moon Goddess and her faithful stag. When the stag was just a fawn, the Moon Goddess saved it from pack of wolves...but she couldn't save his mother. She then would visit the orphaned stag every full moon, where they would meet by the lake where she had saved him. The Moon Goddess would snuggle with her faithful friend, and tell him of everything that was happening in the heavens, and the stag would rest his head in her lap, happy to spend some time with his adopted mother.
One day, while the goddess was visiting her stag, she fell into a deep sleep. During her rest, the pack of wolves returned, this time their eyes set upon the goddess who had thwarted their sport before. The stag met the pack head on, using it's powerful antlers to fend off the wolves long enough for the goddess to awaken. Filled with fury, she unleashed the power of the heavens upon the wolves, turning them to stone. She then went to her stag, but he was gravely wounded and did not have much time left. The goddess wept, and her tears became a river of moonlight. The stag, however, was content, having repaid the goddess for her rescue, love, and kindness.
The stag expired in the goddess' loving embrace, and when she went home to the heavens that night, she brought her dear friend with her, to rest amongst the stars.
I love stories like these...while they can be certainly tearful, they remind us of the give and take of life and love. A truly beautiful testament to the power of empathy and sacrifice.
